I found this image on the UCSD library archives of SIO physical oceanographer Robert Arthur. It depicts surface ocean currents in the South Pacific on a “cloth survival chart” from the 1940s. Apparently navy pilots would carry these in case they were lost at sea and would follow drift patterns…wow.
